Kim Jong-Un is a North Korean political official who succeeded his father, Kim Jong Il, as Supreme Leader of North Korea (2011– ) and First Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea. The early years of his rule were characterized by consolidation of power and a sharp acceleration of North Korea's nuclear weapons development program. Kim Jong-Un was declared the supreme leader of North Korea after the death of his father in December 2011. In April 2012, his status was confirmed by acquiring several official titles: First Secretary of the Korean Workers' Party, Chairman of the Central Military Commission and Chairman of the National Defense Commission, which was the highest bureaucratic authority in the country.
